What to do at Denver Airport

Things to do at the Denver Airport, Layovers in Denver can be difficult due to the peculiar design of Denver International Airport, which is located 25 miles from downtown. However, recent public transit upgrades have allowed travellers with longer layovers to reach the city, and the airport itself has a lot to offer travellers with shorter layovers.

If you have three hours...

If you have a few hours to kill at DIA, be sure to take in the amazing art and design of the airport itself. In 2013, DIA was selected "Best U.S. Airport for Art" in USA Today's "10 Best Reader's Choice" travel poll. The Children of the World Dream of Peace painting at the Jeppesen Main Terminal and the internal garden at the centre core of the C Gates are two of my favourites.

If you only have Five hours...
While five hours may be enough time to see the city at some better-located airports, it's best to stay put during your stopover at DIA. By the time you are in the city, it will be time to turn around and return to ensure you make your flight, and you don't want to chance missing it. However, there are many intriguing elements at the airport that a shorter stay does not provide time to explore.

If you have seven hours...
A longer layover will allow you to get to downtown Denver. The A-Line RTD train takes little over 30 minutes to get from DIA to Union Station. The cost of a single day pass is $9. Once at Union Station, take in the spectacular architecture of the refurbished 1914 Beaux-Arts railway station while visiting Mercantile Dining and Provision or Stoic & Genuine for the freshest seafood in Denver. There are also a few boutiques worth checking out.

If you only had twelve hours...
Use your long stopover to see some of Denver's best cultural institutions. After taking the train into the city, you can easily reach any of these locations by foot or by cab. The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is located in the city's Golden Triangle and is easily accessible by foot from Union Station, especially if you take the free MallRide shuttle up 16th Street Mall. The DAM spans over 350,000 square feet and is loaded with artwork from all across the world.
